Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to contest specific rulings from the official, mirroring the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
