Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
